Nuthin' Beats All Day Rock

It's cool havin' a four day weekend, but I gotta say last weekend was more fun than this one. Last Saturday, after all, we hit a great all-afternoon shindig featuring an onslaught of kick ass local bands (Ghetto Ways, Live Ones, Live Fast Die, ICU, Coy Dogs and Limousine, the first band that we missed). Anyway, it was at The Rock Star Bar, a.k.a. The Local. Every band sounded great, and there was a lotta camaraderie goin' around.

I have to say I was most blown away by ICU, who are way heavier and noisier than the other more straight-ahead rockers they played with (they sound a lot like Unsane). Not only does Pee-Wee, who's got some serious snarl action goin' on when she sings...er...growls, play a mean guitar; I had no idea our buddy Memphis Mike could play drums like he does. I don't think I've ever seen anyone wail on a set of drums the way he did. He plays so free and easy -- he's not graceful, more chaotic, but incredible timing and power. He really does have a Keith Moon kinda thing goin' on and I've never thought that about any other drummer.

Afterwards was cool, too, since we got a tour of Mike and Pee-Wee's new studio-in-progress (quite impressive). It's below the all-new, very-cool Passout Records shop.

The night proceeded to deteriorate into whiskey-fueled aggravation and aggression -- not surprising following an eight hour drinking session. Oh well, them's the breaks, as they say.

The preceding evening we found ourselves at The Lakeside (big surprise). I was hangin' with our friend, Chet, who was in preparatory mode before the following day's big Mermaid Parade festivities at Coney. We missed the parade, but luckily got the chance to see Chet in all his glory thanks to some folks who posted their parade pics online. Here's Chet in the get-up that gets everybody talkin:
