Wedding! Spazz! Live Ones! Yeah!

Talk about no rest for the wicked....

I've been lookin' forward to this weekend for a while now. Today our good friends Anne and Alex are tyin' the knot and throwin' what promises to be one of the most rockin' weddings of all time. Hey, with WFMU's Dave the Spazz as the DJ, what else could it be? I got myself a cool party dress, a pair of sexy dancin' shoes: I'm ready to go. And with Steve off at his buddy's bachelor party later in the evening, I'll have an excuse to take on a new beau for the night! I keed, I keed. I posted their super-cool invite below (minus the location info to prevent all you undesirables from crashin').

And if that ain't enough, tomorrow my fave Brooklyn brothers are gonna be invading Magnetic Field for a much needed rock 'n' roll hangover elixir, Live Ones style. It's an afternoon BBQ bash for Tom Dash (the man behind some of the coolest shows to hit NYC in ages, billed as Dot Dash). Plus, it's in the afternoon and free. Can't beat it.

I'm a Hippie Dork, So Sue Me

All right. So Friday night I had the pleasure of seeing Stephen Stills play a great show at a cool, cozy venue near Columbus Circle called Concert Hall. He was so good...playing mostly solo acoustic and later on with a bluesy back up band. He opened with two of my all time fave songs, period: 4+20 and Helplessly Hoping. He also played some of his other hits like Southern Cross (so great) and an old CSN(Y) hit, Woodstock (well, actually a Joni Mitchell tune).

Of course the crowd was comprised primarily of baby boomers with beer guts and "mom jeans." There were a couple of crusty long hairs sitting in front of me who lived down L.E.S. way, so we grabbed a car together and headed towards Lakeside where I planned to meet Steve (definitely not a fan of the folkie hippie shit I love). After Jerry and Nick, the embodiments of the 60s longhair doper drifter stereotype, left to grab some grub, our always wry friend Alex quipped, "So, where's the other Fabulous Furry Freak Brother?" Lemme tell ya, he was dead on....

Human Race Continues to Disappoint

What's the world coming to?

First they tell me they're doin' a remake of one of my all-time fave flicks that demands to remain untouched, Clash of the Titans. Now I find out Pixies guitarist Joey Santiago has just signed on with Elias Arts to compose tunes for TV ads. Actually, I'm sure he's makin' good money and he deserves it. If anything, I'd much rather see somebody like him write a song that's intended for the purpose of advertising, than hear other music he's written be degraded by use in an ad.

Maybe it's just the "Sponsored by Nobody" Neil Young influence, but I really do hate hearing songs I dig in commercials. Still, I think my natural anti-commercial inclination is becoming an anomaly as more and more people wittingly engage in marketing. I wrote an extensive essay about it recently, in fact, called Sales Pitch Society II.
