Townshend Sings Ciwkews 'round Me

It's August. Cool. I mean, uh...HOT.

Well, I felt compelled to make note of a new addition to my record collection. I was in the city a week ago for a work-related meeting. So, needless to say, I decided to fuck off the rest of the day and make a city outing of it. On my insanely sweaty jaunt I stopped into Generation records to scour their used records downstairs. (I also hoped they'd have the new Crimson Sweet album -- a great NYC band, that, by the way, covers Disowned, a killer tune by my fave B'lyn band, The Live Ones. Alas, they didn't have it.) I found a few things worth pickin' up, including what turned out to be something that will be a late-night Punk Rock Kitchen turntable mainstay: Pete Townshend's Scoop. It's a double album -- yes, with gatefold, baby. But that's not what makes it so compelling. It's a wonderful glimpse into his demos -- the stuff he's recorded over the years in various studios, including his home studios. Mostly him and himself makin' music. As a major Who fan with a soft spot in my heart for Townshend's songwriting and beautifully expressive, sad voice, I have to say I'm really diggin' this. There's stuff that runs the gamut of his career -- from Circles and So Sad About Us, to Quadrophenia outtakes and beyond.

I'm excited to be excited, especially about someone whose music I've loved for so long and don't typically expect to be excited about. Well, I'm havin' a few drinks in anticipation for our big birthday beach bash down the shore the remainder of the week, so gotta go. Just wanted to give a shout out to the man.

Here's one of the many cool shots of him studio-bound from the sleeves:
