Legends on Stage, Me at the Bar
Ever have one of those nights when yer at a show you know you should be into, but ya just don't give a shit? I had a double dose of that Friday. We caught Radio Birdman (old Aussie band) at Irving, a show everybody had been gabbin' about for months and I guess I'd been lookin' forward to (even though their new album isn't especially spectacular or anything). I was up front for a lot of the show, but honestly just not feelin' it after awhile. They played Non Stop Girls right away, and that's my fave tune by them, so I guess since that highpoint hit early, it helped the rock 'n' roll ennui set in as time went on....
Lots of folks were there though, including Rick Fork (shrieker/guitarist extraordinaire of Hot Snakes/Drive Like Jehu/Pitchfork fame). He told me his new band is called The Obits. I'm not sure who else is in the band, but sounds like no one from his other bands. I think they're just kinda gettin' started at this point, but definitely something to look forward to (hey, maybe the fact that his band mates are on this coast means they might actually get together and play around here once in a while!).
Like a bunch of other folks who were at Birdman, we high-tailed it over to CB's to catch The Avengers. I'm not much of a fan, and though they sounded good, it was jam-packed towards the stage. I made my way back to the bar and nursed whiskies with Devon from Magnetic Field, an awesome B'lyn venue/bar with sound to rival any other space around.
We saw Ethan and Aaron from Live Fast Die. Big Takeover's Jack Rabid and Dot Dash's Tom Dash were at both shows (I think?). I'm gonna catch Tom's new band, Imaginary Icons Friday at Mag Field. I'm totally addicted to their 7"; they remind me so much of early Wire, but they've got their own unique sound. They played on Terre T's WFMU show back in June. LISTEN FOOL!
I also saw Jenna from Ghetto Ways in the li'l girl's room at Birdman. They're playin' Saturday at Passout Records with ICU (Metal!), Live Fast Die and my long-standing faves, The Live Ones. Ghetto Ways are total troopers. The last time I caught them, they came from a battle of the bands in Bushwick where they came in second, then rocked the house down at Passout. Plus, they got me pumped 'cause they covered one of my all time favorite songs. I mean it: ELO's Don't Bring Me Down.

The reason I'm name-droppin' is to give me a reason to link to all these guys' kick ass shit, 'cause the truth is, these days the local lesser-knowns are the ones who have me excited way more than any supposedly legendary bands. Blasphemous? So be it.
Well, with a few exceptions, including THE NEW MAIDEN!
